The Forester women's hockey team prevailed 7-5 at Sacred Heart
University Tuesday afternoon (January 5). Lake Forest, ranked 10th
in the nation, raised its record on the season to 10-1-2 while the
Pioneers fell to 4-10-0.
Forester sophomore Kim Herring (Dover, N.H./Groton School) scored
the game's first goal for the fourth consecutive contest. She was
assisted by freshman Angie Chronis (Ann Arbor, Mich./Victory Honda)
and the visitors led 1-0 after just 87 seconds of play.
Sacred Heart, however, scored the game's next four goals. The
Pioneers tied the score at the 8:06 mark and converted a power play
opportunity at 14:26. The home team scored again at 4:18 in the
second and finished off the 4-0 run just 31 seconds later.
Lake Forest then rattled off five goals in a row to regain the
lead. Junior Lynn Switaj (Avon Lake, Ohio/Ohio Flames) started the
scoring barrage with her fifth of the season at 6:27 in the second.
Herring was credited with the assist. Forester freshman Denise Perez (San Jose, Calif./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) scored just 46
seconds later off a pass from sophomore Jessica Dare (Whitmore
Lake, Mich./Belle Tire).
Herring became the first player in the nation with 20 goals when
she lit the lamp at the 3:15 mark of the third period. Dare then
put Lake Forest back on top just 51 seconds later and added her
ninth score of the year at 9:05. Sophomore Mira Trebilcock (South
Porcupine, Ontario/Trinity College School) assisted on the second
of Dare's back-to-back goals. The Pioneers pulled back to within a
goal with 5:05 remaining but an emtpy-net goal by Perez with 31
seconds to play sealed the Forester victory It was her second score
of the game and third this season.
Lake Forest junior goaltender Brittany Lemke (St. Charles, Ill./St.
Mary's University) entered the game midway through the second
period and stopped 15 of 16 shots on goal the rest of the way to
earn the victory. She is now 4-1-0 with a .909 save percentage on
the season.
Both teams attempted 11 shots on goal in the first period and Lake
Forest out-shot Sacred Heart 14-10 in the second and 10-9 in the
third.
It was the second time this season and third time in team history
that the Foresters erased a three-goal deficit to win a game. They
also accomplished the feat in the season opener against St. Mary's
University and on February 2, 2002, at UW-Eau Claire.
The team will return home after winning two of three games on their
eastern trip. Its next two games will be played at first-year
Northern Collegiate Hockey Association member Adrian College in two
weekends (January 16-17). Saturday night's game will begin at 7:00
(EST) and the teams will face off again at 2:00 (EST) Sunday
afternoon.
