The Lake Forest College women's hockey team, ranked sixth in the
nation, split a pair of games at the University of Massachusetts
Boston's Codfish Bowl over the weekend (January 2-3). The Foresters
fell 3-1 to the hosts on Saturday before knocking off Bowdoin
College 3-2 in overtime in Sunday's consolation game. Lake Forest
is now 9-1-2 on the season.
Forester sophomore Kim Herring (Dover, N.H./Groton School), who
entered the weekend leading the country in points and tied for the
national lead in goals, put the visitors on the scoreboard first
against UMass Boston on Saturday. Her power play goal was assisted
by sophomore Molly Wallner (Chatham, Ill./Chicago Young Americans)
at 14:11 in the opening period.
The Beacons, however, tied the score at 17:47 before taking the
lead on a power play score with 72 seconds remaining in the period.
The home team added an insurance goal at the 16:23 mark of the
second period.
The Foresters outshot the Beacons 44-16 in the game but suffered
their first loss of the season. The team's 10-game unbeaten streak
was the longest in program history.
Herring gave Lake Forest the early lead again on Sunday against
Bowdoin. She scored seven minutes and 25 seconds into the game with
junior Lynn Switaj (Avon Lake, Ohio/Ohio Flames) earning the
assist. Switaj, along with senior Courtney Bean (Peoria, Ill./Team
Illinois), assisted Herring again on a power play goal at 8:08 in
the second.
Bowdoin out-shot the Foresters 30-17 in the first two periods and
finally got on the scoreboard 47 seconds in the third. The Polar
Bears out-shot Lake Forest again 13-8 in the final 20 minutes of
regulation and tied the game with 2:48 left on the clock.
Overtime lasted just 29 seconds before Herring completed her third
hat trick of the year. Senior Jamie Sauer (Eagle River,
Wis./Northland Pines H.S.) earned the assist on Herring's fourth
goal of the weekend and NCAA Division III-high 18th score of
2009-10.
Lake Forest junior goaltender Alyssa Wintermute (Belmont,
Ontario/St. Thomas Panthers) stopped 41 of 43 shots on goal in the
contest, raising her record on the season to 6-0-2 and save
percentage to .929.
Herring was named to the Codfish Bowl All-Tournament Team.
The Foresters' three-game trip will conclude at Sacred Heart
University Tuesday (January 5) at 1:00 p.m. (EST).
