The Forester men's hockey team skated to a 5-5 tie at Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday night (January 16). Lake Forest now owns a 5-8-1 overall record and 5-4-1 mark in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Falcons are now 0-13-2 overall and 0-9-1 in the league.
Concordia Wisconsin scored a power play goal at the 16:23 mark
of the opening period and a shorthanded goal with 70 seconds
remaining before the first intermission. The Foresters out-shot the
home team 12-3 during the game's first 20 minutes but trailed 2-0
going into the second period.
The deficit doubled when the Falcons netted power play goals at
10:40 and 17:15 in the second. Lake Forest finally got on the
scoreboard at 18:14 on a shorthanded goal by senior Justin Taylor
(Sun Valley, Idaho/Walpole Stars). Freshman Chad Thompson
(Rockwood, Ontario/Listowel Cyclones) and junior Tyler Gross (Fond
du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac H.S.) earned assists on Taylor's seventh
goal of the year. The Foresters had an 18-13 edge in shots on goal
in the second period but were still behind 4-1 after 40 minutes of
play.
Lake Forest senior Adam Love (Durham, Ontario/Elmira Sugar Kings),
who scored 28 seconds into Friday night's third period, needed 52
seconds in the third to light the lamp on Saturday. His sixth goal
this year was assisted by freshman Robert Bote (Eching,
Germany/Smith Falls Bears) and senior Peter Pfeffer (Farmington
Hills, Mich./Walpole Stars). Freshman Zak Borowski (Gloucester,
Ma./Granite City Lumberjacks) then pulled the visitors to within a
goal at the 3:17 mark on his fourth score of the season. Bote and
Thompson were both credited with their second assists of the
game.
The Falcons netted what appeared to be a game-clinching goal while
on the power play at 12:24. However, the Foresters pulled their
goalie and Bote scored his fourth goal this season with exactly a
minute remaining in regulation. Taylor assisted on the score. The
Lake Forest goalie was on the bench again when, with just nine
seconds on the clock, freshman Marc Rubino (Woodbridge, Ontario/St.
Michael's Buzzers) scored his team-high ninth goal of the year to
tie the game and send it into overtime. Bote and freshman Trent Brown (Ayr, Ontario/Elmira Sugar Kings) assisted on the official
game-tying goal.
Lake Forest put 27 shots on goal to the Falcons' eight in the third
period and out-shot the home team 9-1 in the scoreless 5-minute
overtime period.
The Foresters will host another MCHA series against Northland
College next weekend (January 22-23). The teams will face off at
7:30 Friday night and at 2:30 Saturday afternoon.
