The Lake Forest College men's hockey team won its first-ever
meeting with Northland College Friday night (January 22) by the
score of 4-2. The Foresters are now 6-8-1 overall this season and
6-4-1 in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play. The visiting
LumberJacks fell to 2-14-0 overall and 2-9-0 in conference
play.
Northland started the scoring at the 7:58 mark of the opening
period and led 1-0 despite being out-shot 16-5 in the first 20
minutes of play.
Both teams scored a power play goal in a second period that saw the
Foresters put 17 shots on goal and the LumberJacks 16. Lake Forest
senior Justin Taylor (Sun Valley, Idaho/Walpole Stars) scored his
eighth goal of the year at 16:35 with freshman Thomas Bark
(Toronto, Ontario/Streetsville Derbys) and sophomore Chad Thompson
(Rockwood, Ontario/Listowel Cyclones) each earning an assist. The
visitors, however, regained the lead with just 1:17 remaining in
the period.
Lake Forest scored 10 third period goals in two games last weekend
and netted three while out-shooting Northland 18-8 in the final
stanza on Friday. Senior Sean Farley (Park Ridge, Ill./Utica
College) tied the game at the 12:24 mark on off assists from
Thompson and junior Anthony Ventura (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Lebanon
Valley College). Sophomore Ben Finney (Pontypool, Ontario/Robert
Morris University) then scored the official game-winner, his first
goal as a Forester, during a 4-on-3 power play opportunity at
17:58. Thompson and senior Peter Pfeffer (Farmington Hills,
Mich./Walpole Stars) were each credited with an assist. Finally,
Farley lit the lamp again with 25 seconds left to secure the
victory. His second goal of the period and fourth this season was
assisted by Thompson and freshman Zak Borowski (Gloucester,
Ma./Granite City Lumberjacks).
Forester freshman goaltender Mike McDonald (Whitby,
Ontario/Orangeville Crushers) stopped 27 of 29 LumberJack shots on
goal for his first career victory.
The Foresters will host Northland again tomorrow afternoon at
2:30.
