The Lake Forest College men's hockey team erased a two-goal
third-period deficit but eventually fell 5-4 in overtime at
Milwaukee School of Engineering Friday night (February 12). The
Foresters are now 7-13-1 overall this season and 7-9-1 in Midwest
Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Raiders raised their
overall record to 12-8-2 and league mark to 11-5-1.
The Foresters scored the contest's first goal three minutes and
seven seconds into the game. It was senior Nick Ghidina's (Pekin,
Ill./Wichita Falls Wildcats) first score of the season and he was
assisted by freshman Phil Bushbacher (Glenview, Ill./Aurora
Tigers). The Raiders tied the score on a 4-on-4 goal at 11:53 and
took the lead at 17:32. M.S.O.E. out-shot the visitors 16-5 in the
first 20 minutes of the contest and led 2-1 at the first
intermission.
The second period follwed a similar script as the first. Lake
Forest senior Sean Farley (Park Ridge, Ill./Utica College) lit the
lamp just 58 seconds into the period but Raider goals at 7:46 and
15:35 gave the home team a 4-2 advantage at the end of the period.
Farley's fifth goal of the season was assisted by junior Anthony Ventura (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Lebanon Valley College). The
Foresters were out-shot 17-10 in the period.
The visitors had a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal in the third
period. They pulled to within one goal when senior Justin Taylor
(Sun Valley, Idaho/Walpole Stars) converted a power play
opportunity at 3:46 and freshman Thomas Bark (Toronto,
Ontario/Streetsville Derbys) tied it at 7:53. Taylor's 10th goal of
the year was assisted by freshmen Marc Rubino (Woodbridge,
Ontario/St. Michael's Buzzers) and Mike Rubino (Woodbridge,
Ontario/St. Michael's Buzzers). Ventura and Taylor assisted on
Bark's fifth of 2009-10.
M.S.O.E. scored 88 seconds into the overtime period to end the game
and clinch home-ice advantage for the MCHA quarterfinal series
between the Raiders and Foresters in two weeks.
The same two teams will face off in Lake Forest at 7:30 tomorrow
night. A live radio broadcast of the contest will be available at
wmxm.org.
