Behind sophomore forward Billy Kent's first career three-point game, the Lake Forest College men's hockey team defeated host Northland College 5-2 on Saturday.
Kent scored the official game-winner at the 11:24 mark of the second period, added his fifth score of the season as insurance at 18:17 in the third, and then assisted on another goal with 44 seconds remaining in the contest.
Forester junior forward Jack Lewis started the scoring with an unassisted goal just 56 seconds into the game. His fourth tally of the year turned out to be the only goal of the opening period.
After Northland tied the score four minutes into the second period, senior defenseman Robert Wiener gave the visitors the lead for good at 11:07 on his first goal of the season. Sophomore forward Charlie Izaguirre assisted on the score, which occured just 17 seconds before Kent added to the lead. Wiener and sophomore defenseman Bryan McFarlane assisted Kent at 11:24 and Lake Forest took a 3-1 lead into the final period.
The LumberJacks converted a power play opportunity at 8:13 in the third to pull to within a goal. Freshman forward Drew Cleereman assisted on Kent's fifth score of the year 10 minutes later and Kent set up a power play goal by freshman forward Bron Loiselle in the final minute to finish off the victory. It was Loiselle's second goal of the season.
Lake Forest senior goaltender Leo Podolsky made 29 saves on the day, taking his career total past the 1,500 mark.
The Foresters out-shot the home team 9-7 in the first period, 12-9 in the second, and 36-31 in the contest.
The victory improves Lake Forest's overall record to 4-6-0 and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark to 3-5-0. Northland fell to 2-8-0 overall and 2-6-0 in the league.
The Foresters' next game will be played outdoors at The Winter Club in Lake Forest on Wednesday. The team will face off against visiting Aurora University under the stars at 7:00 p.m.
