The Forester men's basketball team dropped a 100-95 decision to visiting Grinnell College Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward Jim Schick shot 12-for-12 from the field and 11-for-12 from the free throw line while leading all players in the game with a career-high 35 points.
Schick also reached double figures in rebounds for the first time in his career, finishing with a game-high 12. He is the first Forester to make as many as 12 field goals in a game without a miss since Travis Clark accomplished the feat against Illinois College in February of 2010. The team record is an 18-for-18 shooting performance by Franklyn Beckford against Grinnell in 2004.
Senior guard James Stack also set a new career-high with 23 points. He connected on four of five attempts from three-point range as well as nine of 12 free throws. Freshman guard Josh Irving also reached double figures with 13 points, including eight on 10 attempts from the foul line.
The Foresters shot 48 percent from the field in the game and connected on a program record 39 free throws in 50 attempts. Lake Forest out-rebounded the visitors 50-44 but committed 28 turnovers to the Pioneers' 12.
The home team led by as many as a dozen points in the opening period but the difference was cut in half by the time the buzzer sounded and the Foresters took a 46-40 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Grinnell chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied the game at 68 with 11:10 to play. The Pioneers also scored the next four points for the first of nine lead changes in less than 10 minutes. The visitors took the lead for good on a three-pointer with 1:45 remaining and made five of six free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the win.
The loss dropped Lake Forest's overall record to 6-12 and their Midwest Conference mark to 5-8. The Pioneers are now 14-4 overall and 9-4 in the league.
The Foresters' next game will be Wednesday evening at Beloit College. The contest will begin at 5:30.
