The Forester men's basketball team was defeated 83-60 by Wilmington College in the consolation game of Hope College's Holland Sentinel/Russ DeVette Tournament on Saturday. Lake Forest junior forward Brian Madson scored all of his team-high 14 points in the first half.
Madson entered the contest with the Foresters trailing 7-0 after two minutes of play and scored 11 points during a 13-2 run by the visitors. Wilmington regained the lead but Lake Forest eventually took it back on three free throws by Madson with 7:28 to play in the first half. A three-pointer by senior guard Jordan Gipson on the Foresters' next possession made the score 25-20. However, Wilmington outscored Lake Forest 18-5 during the rest of the period and led 38-30 at halftime.
A three-pointer by Foresters freshman guard Josh Irving trimmed the margin to four with 16 minutes to play in the contest but they would get no closer. An 18-2 run by the Quakers later in the period put the game out of reach.
Lake Forest had four players score in double figures, led by Madson's 14. Senior guard James Stack was next with 13 while Gipson and sophomore forward Torrey Davis added 10 apiece. Madson and Davis tied for the team lead with six rebounds while Stack and Davis dished out a team-high three assists apiece.
The Foresters made a season-high nine three-pointers but needed 25 attempts to accomplish the feat. They shot 38 percent from the field overall while the Quakers connected at a 56 percent clip. Lake Forest was out-rebounded 35-31 and committed 20 turnovers while forcing just nine.
Lake Forest is now 3-7 on the year while Wilmington raised its record to 5-4.
The Forester will resume Midwest Conference play on Monday, January 6, against Illinois College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
