The Lake Forest College men's basketball team was defeated 78-66 at Hope College Friday night in the semifinals of the Holland Sentinel/Russ DeVette Tournament. Freshman guard Josh Irving came off the bench to lead the Foresters with a season-high 15 points.
Irving also led the visitors with five rebounds, four assists, and two steals, despite playing just 20 minutes in the contest. Senior guard Jordan Gipson and sophomore forward Austin Terry also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Both teams shot slightly better than 40 percent from the field and made 19 free throws. Hope knocked down nine three-pointers to the Foresters' three, out-rebounded Lake Forest 43-35, and committed two fewer turnovers (10-12).
The Foresters' last lead in the game was 19-18 with less than five minutes to play in the opening period. The Flying Dutchmen outscored their guests 14-4 over the next three-plus minutes and took a 33-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Gipson scored six points in the first three minutes of the second half but that was all Lake Forest could muster for the first six-and-a-half minutes of the period. Hope extended its lead to 19 points (52-33) and eventually led by as many as 21. The Foresters pulled to within a dozen points (62-50) on a basket by Davis with less than seven minutes to play but they would get no closer.
Lake Forest fell to 3-6 on the season while Hope raised its record to 3-4.
The Foresters will face Wilmington College in the tournament's consolation game at 1:00 (EST) Saturday afternoon.
