The Forester men's basketball team defeated visiting Lawrence University 83-76 on Tuesday. Senior guard James Stack knocked down four three-pointers grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, and was one of five Lake Forest players to dish out three assists.
Stack was 4-for-6 from three-point range and 6-for-6 from the free throw line in an 18-point performance. He was second on the team in scoring behind freshman forward Jim Schick, who poured in a career-high 19. Schick shot 7-for-11 from the field and added six rebounds and three assists. Stack was also the Foresters' second-leading rebounder behind junior forward Brian Madson, who pulled down eight boards and finished with 14 points. Sophomore forward Torrey Davis also reached double figures with 13 points and freshman guard Josh Irving added nine. Davis, Irving, and senior guard Jordan Gipson matched Stack and Schick with three assists apiece.
Lake Forest set a new season-high with 17 assists in the contest.
Both teams shot 27-for-60 (45%) from the field and committed a dozen turnovers. The Foresters had a 39-31 edge in rebounds and made 22 of 27 foul shots while Lawrence connected on 16 of 20 attempts from the line.
Lawrence scored the first five points of the game and that 5-0 advantage turned out to be the largest lead by either team in the first half. The Foresters scored the next seven points for the first of nine lead changes in the period. The score was also tied seven times. A three-pointer by Schick with 1:21 remaining gave the home team the lead for good and his jumper with 44 seconds left made the score 36-32 going into the locker room at halftime.
Schick scored seven more points during a 14-5 run early in the second half that extended the Lake Forest lead to 11 with 16 minutes to play. Lawrence scored the next five points but the margin was soon 11 again after a pair of free throws by Davis with 10:53 left. The Vikings outscored the home team 16-6 over the next four minutes but a three-pointer by Stack made it a four-point game and the visitors got no closer. Lake Forest shot 12-for-12 from the free throw line in the final minute-and-a-half of the game to secure the victory.
The Foresters are now 4-9 overall this season and 3-5 in Midwest Conference play. Lawrence fell to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in the league.
Lake Forest will travel to Monmouth College on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
