The Lake Forest College men's basketball team was defeated 92-89 in triple-overtime by visiting Macalester College on Saturday. Junior forward Brian Madson led the home team with 20 points.
Madson made eight of 15 field goal attempts, including three from beyond the arc. He also blocked a pair of shots in the game.
Junior forward Tyrone Staggers was next on the team with 16 points and he pulled down 16 rebounds for his first career double-double. Sophomore forward Torrey Davis also recorded his first double-double, finishing the game with 10 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, a team-high five assists, and two steals. Senior guard Jordan Gipson matched his career-high with 15 points and freshman guard Andrew Toth's 11 points were the most in his short career.
The Foresters had a 51-44 edge in rebounds and forced six more turnovers (23) than they committed (17). Macalester, however, shot 46.9 percent from the field to Lake Forest's 38.5 and connected on 12 of 28 three-pointers while the home team made just seven of 27 attempts from long-range.
Lake Forest trailed 17-9 before rattling off 14 points in a row to take a 23-17 lead. The Forester advantage grew to as many as seven points twice in the first half, which ended with the home team ahead 41-35.
The Foresters remained in the lead until a three-pointer by Macalester put the visitors ahead by one with 11:38 to play in the second half. Neither team trailed by more than three points and the lead changed hads four more times in the period. A layup by Davis with 17.9 seconds on the clock tied the score at 71 and the Scots were unable to connect in the closing seconds of regulation.
Each team led in the first five-minute overtime period. The Foresters went ahead by five on a rebound and put-back by Madson with 1:27 on the clock but did not score again. The Scots came back on a three-pointer with 1:06 remaining and a basket with 30 ticks left. Lake Forest's shot at the buzzer rimmed out and the teams prepared for another overtime.
A pair of free throws and a basket by Staggers gave the home team a four-point lead early in the second overtime. After a basket by the Scots, Davis connected for two more free throws with 2:14 left to restore the Foresters' four-point advantage. The visitors scored two points on each of their next two possessions and the score remained 86-86 for the final minute-and-a-half of the period.
Macalester scored first and led throughout the third and final overtime. A layup by Gipson trimmed the deficit to a single point with 1:27 to play but the Foresters were unable to score again.
Lake Forest fell to 1-2 on the season whlie the Scots evened their record at 1-1.
The Foresters will begin Midwest Conference play next Tuesday at Carroll University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
