Freshman Allison Watts was one of four undefeated Foresters on Tuesday as the Lake Forest College women's tennis team defeated Wittenberg University 7-2 and Juniata College 6-3.
Watts gave the Foresters the early lead when she finished off a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory at #4 singles against Wittenberg. After the Tigers earned the point at #5, senior Christi Valicenti took both sets at the top spot in the lineup by the same 6-2 score to regain the advantage for Lake Forest. Fellow senior Grace Dowling followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at #3 and junior Lucia Stumbras posted a hard-fought 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), (10-3) victory at #4 . Wittenberg came out on top of a grueling 17-15 third set super tiebreaker at #6 to make the score 4-2.
Valicenti and Dowling clinched the match with their 8-0 rout at #1 doubles. Watts and Stumbras prevailed 8-6 at #2 while freshman Alex Kopish and sophomore Whitney Navarro won by the same score at #3.
Lake Forest started its evening contest with Juniata by winning two of the three doubles matches. After the Eagles earned the first point at #3, Valicenti and Dowling finished off an 8-4 victory at #1 and Watts and Stumbras edged out their opponents 8-6 at #2.
The Foresters continued their success at the top of the lineup in singles. Watts and Valicenti won 6-2, 6-3 at #3 and #1, respectively, and Dowling's 6-3, 6-1 triumph at #2 secured the Lake Forest victory. After Juniata claimed points at #6 and #5, Stumbras closed out the day by taking both sets 6-4 at #4.
Ranked tied-for-20th in the Central Region, the Foresters are now 13-2 on the year. Juniata fell to 3-3.
Lake Forest will close out its Spring Break trip with a Thursday morning match against Ursinus College. The contest will begin at 9:00 (EST) and be played at Winter Haven City Tennis Center in Winter Haven, Florida.
