Lake Forest College women's tennis player Christi Valicenti was named Midwest Conference Performer of the Week on Tuesday for her performance at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships last weekend.
Valicenti, a senior, partered with classmate Grace Dowling in doubles and the duo upset the tournament's #2 seeds from Denison University 9-7 in the second round. They continued their run in the round of 16, knocking off the 14th-seeded team from Case Western Reserve University by the same 9-7 score. They were finally defeated 8-4 in the quarterfinals by the #10 seeds and eventual runners-up from Washington University in St. Louis.
Valicenti was also successful in singles, defeating a player from Elmhurst College 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round and one from Oberlin College 6-1, 6-0 in the second. She then fell 6-3, 6-1 to the top seed in the event in the round of 32.
No Forester doubles team had ever advanced as far in the ITA Regional Championships as Valicenti and Dowling and the College's last singles player to play deeper into the event than Valicenti was Alli Berry, whose two victories in 2007 took her to the round of 16.
MWC Performers of the Week are selected by the league's director of media and information.
