LAKE FOREST, Ill. – First Midwest Bank is proud to be the title sponsor of the second annual "The Sleds Are Coming" event on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of Lake Forest College. The Lake Forest College Athletics Department, in conjunction with the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association (GLASA), will host the event, to take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public, but donations are encouraged in order to support GLASA.
In addition to co-sponsoring with the Gates Center for Personal Growth and Leadership and Residence Life, the event will seek to incorporate other areas of the campus and greater Lake Forest communities. Former Chicago Blackhawk and 1980 USA Gold Medalist Jack O'Callahan will make an appearance as a special guest and Larry Potash, morning anchorman at WGN, will serve as an honorary official and drop the puck at the event.
A promotional video for the second annual "The Sleds Are Coming" is available on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6fuNK17NKE
The purpose of "The Sleds Are Coming" is to bring campus and community exposure to GLASA and showcase its sled hockey program while raising funds for the Falcons sled hockey team and other GLASA athletes. The Falcons are coached by retired Lake Forest men's hockey coach Tony Fritz. In addition to the game, there will be raffle prizes, including an iPad, and a puck toss competition.
Last year, in its inaugural year, the event raised nearly $1,800 for the organization and had over 400 people in attendance. The competition on the ice consisted of two 15-minute periods of 8-on-8 sled hockey played by members of the GLASA Falcons and two 10-minute periods of 16-on-16 sled hockey played by teams made up of the Falcons and various members of the College community. Several Forester athletes from various sports also took part in the action.
