The Lake Forest College men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie at Milwaukee School of Engineering, the 15th-ranked team in the nation, Friday night. Forester sophomore Ben Certo scored the game's first goal and classmate Bobby Barrett netted the last with just 34 seconds to play in regulation.
Certo's sixth goal of the season and his fifth in the last seven games was assisted by fellow sophomores Charlie Stein and Mcauley Banning at the 7:01 mark of the opening period. M.S.O.E. tied the game at 14:55 and the score was still 1-1 at the first intermission.
The Raiders took the lead on a power play goal at 6:07 in the second.
The Foresters pulled senior goaltender Brendan Sullivan with 59 seconds to play and having the extra attacker paid off when Barrett scored 25 seconds later. Certo and junior Mike Violette earned assists on Barrett's fourth goal of the year.
Lake Forest went on the power play 10 seconds later and the home team incurred another penalty in overtime. The Foresters outshot the Raiders 5-0 in the extra frame but were unable to score the game-winner. The visitors had a 30-21 advantage in shots on goal on the night.
Sullivan made 19 saves in the contest and improved his goals against average on the year to 2.44.
It was the Foresters' second consecutive tie against a ranked opponent and their second tie against M.S.O.E. this season. Lake Forest is now 9-9-4 overall and 6-8-3 in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Raiders are 13-7-2 overall and 10-5-2 in the league.
The same two teams will face off in Lake Forest Saturday night at 7:00. The Foresters' 2013 Peter Taylor Award winner will be announced between the first and second periods and former head coach Tony Fritz will be recognized after the recent announcement by the American Hockey Coaches Association that he is this year's John MacInnes Award recipient.
