The Forester men's hockey team won 3-2 at Marian University Saturday night to earn a split in the home-and-home weekend series with the Sabres. Lake Forest sophomore Jordan Bruce scored a pair of goals in the contest, including the game-winner with 3:31 to play.
Bruce also started the scoring with a goal at the 16:19 mark of the opening period. He was assisted by freshman Ian Pichel and junior Andrew Stein. It was the first career point for Pichel.
Lake Forest had an 11-4 edge in shots on goal in the opening period and led 1-0 when the buzzer sounded.
Marian tied the score at the 9:43 mark of the second stanza but the Forester regained the lead on Andrew Stein's second score of the season with just 33 seconds to play in the period. Junior Roberto Caparelli assisted in the five-on-three power play score.
The Foresters out-shot the home team 12-9 in the second period and led 2-1 with 20 minutes to play.
The Sabres tied the game again on a power play goal at the 4:20 mark of the final period. Lake Forest, however, pulled ahead again on Bruce's second score of the game and season at the 16:29 mark. Sophomore Bobby Barrett assisted on what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
Marian out-shot the Foresters 11-8 in the final period and pulled its goalie with a minute to play but was unable to tie the score again.
Lake Forest freshman goaltender Leo Podolsky made 22 saves to win his collegiate debut.
The Foresters are now 1-2 overall this season while Marian fell to 1-2-1. Both teams are 1-1-0 in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play.
Lake Forest will play a home-and-home series with fellow MCHA foe Concordia University Wisconsin next weekend. The teams will face off in Mequon, Wisconsin, Friday night at 7:00 and in Lake Forest, Illinois, at the same time on Saturday.
