The Lake Forest College men's hockey team prevailed 3-2 at Northland College on Saturday to salvage a split the the weekend series. Forester sophomore Luke Swardenski's power play goal with 15 minutes remaining held up as the game-winner.
It was Swardenski's first goal of the season and his first career game-winner. Freshman Ian Pichel and sophomore Charlie Stein assisted on the score.
The Foresters entered the final period trailing 2-1 but drew even on a power play goal by sophomore Bobby Barrett at the 1:40 mark. Juniors Roberto Caparelli and Mike Violette assisted on Barrett's third goal of 2012-13.
Barrett also scored the first goal of the contest at the 17:13 mark of the opening period. He was assisted by Violette and freshman Ben Certo.
Northland tied the score on a shorthanded goal at 7:07 in the second period and took the lead less than two minutes later.
The Foresters outshot the home team 18-5 in the first period, 8-7 in the second, and 16-8 in the third. Lake Forest senior goaltender Brendan Sullivan stopped 18 of 20 shots on goal in the contest to earn the victory.
Lake Forest is now 5-8-2 overall this season and 2-7-1 in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play. Northland fell to 4-9-1 overall and 2-8-0 in the league.
The Foresters will host Finlandia University next weekend. Friday night's game will begin at 7:00 and the teams will be back out on the Alumni Memorial Field House ice at 2:00 Saturday afternoon.
