The Forester women's basketball team hosted and defeated Grinnell College 73-44 at home on Saturday. Lake Forest junior guard Danielle Canulli led all players in the contest with 21 points and three steals.
A traditional three-point play with 4:34 remaining in the first half gave Canulli half of the Foresters' first 26 points and the home team a five-point lead. After a Grinnell three-pointer, Lake Forest junior guard Abby Wiedman hit a jumper, a free throw, and another jumper and sophomore guard Michelle Ricolcol followed with a three-pointer to make the score 34-24 at halftime.
A 16-1 Forester run to open the second half extended the lead to 25 points and the Pioneers got no closer than 19 the rest of the way.
Canulli shot 9-for-14 from the field and added six rebounds in the contest. Wiedman and Ricolcol also reached double figures with 10 points apiece and senior guard Sam Schuring added nine points and led all players in the game with seven assists and a career-high-tying nine rebounds. Schuring is now just five assists shy of the program's career record of 372 set by Priscilla Posick in 1990.
Lake Forest shot 46.3 percent in the game wihle limiting the visitors to just 25.4 percent shooting. The Foresters had a slight 44-43 edge in rebounds and committed a season-low 10 turnovers while forcing 18.
The victory raised the Foresters' overall record to 5-13 and they are now 5-8 in Midwest Conference play. Grinnell fell to 2-16 overall and 1-12 in the league.
Lake Forest will travel to Beloit College on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
