The Lake Forest College women's basketball team was defeated 80-59 by Carthage College Saturday afternoon in the Foresters' first home game of the season. Senior point guard Sam Schuring led the home team with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Schuring shot 9-for-14 from the field and made her only attempt from three-point range. Sophomore guard Michelle Ricolcol shot 4-for-5 from the floor and was next on the team with nine points.
Carthage shot 47.8 percent from the fiend on the afternoon while the Foresters connected on just 37.1 percent of their field goal attempts. Both teams made three shots from beyond the arc, the Lady Reds out-rebounded Lake Forest 44-36, and the home team committed 21 of the game's 38 turnovers.
The visitors jumped out to an 11-3 advantage and later outscored the Foresters 26-4 during an eight-and-a-half minute span. After making a couple of baskets to close the half, Lake Forest trailed 42-17.
The Foresters closed to within 15 points on a pair of free throws by Schuring with five minutes left and again on a layup by Ricolcol with 4:34 to play but they would get no closer.
The loss drops Lake Forest's record on the season to 0-4 while Carthage, who began the year ranked 12th in the nation by D3hoops.com, raised its mark to 3-1.
The Foresters will begin Midwest Conference play at 7:30 next Tuesday night at Carroll University.
