The Lake Forest College women's basketball team dropped a 79-68 decision at Carroll University Tuesday night in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams. Forester junior guard Abby Wiedman matched her career-high with 19 points in the contest.
Wiedman knocked down five three-pointers in 11 attempts and shot 7-for-15 from the field overall. Junior forward Sam Cady was next on the team with 13 points and she led the visitors with nine rebounds and tied for team-high honors with five assists. Sophomore forward K.C. Stralka also reached double figures with 10 points and added eight boards.
Carroll scored the game's first nine points and led throughout. The margin grew to as many as 16 points in the first half, which ended with the Foresters trailing 35-25.
Lake Forest eventually cut the Carroll lead to eight points on a layup by Stralka with 13:47 to play and again on a basket by sophomore guard Michelle Ricolcol with 12:21 left. A layup by Wiedman with three minutes remaining pulled the Foresters to within seven at 65-58 but they would get no closer.
The Foresters shot 48.2 percent from the field, slightly better than Carroll's 44.8. The visitors, however, made just nine of 19 free throws and committed 29 turnovers to the Pioneers' 15.
Lake Forest fell to 0-5 overall on the season while Carroll inproved to 3-1.
The Forester will travel to Ripon College on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. conference game.
