Freshman defenseman Connor Duncan scored his first collegiate goal but the Lake Forest College men's hockey team was defeated 5-3 at the College of St. Scholastica Friday night.
Duncan scored the first of three Forester power play goals with 1:46 to play in the opening period. Sophomore forward Bron Loiselle and junior forward Charlie Izaguirre assisted on the first career score for Duncan, which cut the St. Scholastica lead at the time to 2-1.
The Saints regained their two-goal lead just 47 seconds later and out-shot the visitors 12-10 in the first period.
St. Scholastica added to its lead with a power play goal at 11:29 in the second and tacked on another score just 25 seconds later.
Forester sophomore forward Cody Guidorzi converted another power play opportunity wit his second goal of the year at 15:30. The score was 5-2 after 40 minutes of play and the Saints had an 23-19 advantage in shots on goal at that point in the game.
Lake Forest out-shot the home team 15-7 the rest of the way and scored the last goal of the game while on the power play just 59 seconds into the third period. It was the first score of the season for senior defenseman Mark Esshaki, who was assisted by Izaguirre and Loiselle.
Senior goaltender Billy Cooper entered the game after the Saints' fifth goal and kept them off the scoreboard during his nearly 27 minutes between the pipes.
The Foresters are now 3-2-0 overall and in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play this season. It was the league opener for St. Scholastica, which evened its overall record on the year at 2-2-0. The same two teams will face off again Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
