The Lake Forest College volleyball team was defeated 25-12, 25-17, 25-16 Wednesday night at the University of Chicago, the 18th-ranked team in the country. The Foresters' .261 hitting percentage on the night was their third-best mark this season but no match for the Maroons' .447.
Freshman middle blocker Brittany Avonts led the visitors with a dozen kills and recorded the team's only ace. Sophomore K.C. Wenson, another middle blocker, was next on the team with eight kills and both Avonts and Wenson posted a .429 hitting percentage in the match. Junior setter Torie Pasiewicz paced the squad with 17 assists and sophomore libero Brianne Honda with nine digs.
Chicago started fast with 10 of the first 12 points and continued to pull away for a convincing first set victory.
A 9-3 run early in the second set extended the home team's lead to eight points and the Maroons eventually took the set by the same margin.
Chicago won 15 of the first 20 points in the third and final set and held off any attempt at a Forester comeback.
Lake Forest fell to 5-10 on the season while the Maroons raised their record to 11-5.
The Foresters will begin Midwest Conference play at home Friday night against Ripon College. The match will begin at 7:00.
