The Forester volleyball team opened the 2013 season at the Elmhurst Invitational over the weekend. Lake Forest posted a three-set victory over Illinois Wesleyan University but fell in three to Buena Vista University Friday night. The Foresters fell in three to #4 Elmhurst and edged out Wisconsin Lutheran College in five sets on Saturday. Sophomore Erin Sully led the team with 33 kills, 38 digs, and four aces on the weekend.
Sully recorded a match-high 11 kills in the 25-23, 25-12, 27-25 win over Illinois Wesleyan and her eight digs tied for game-high honors. Fellow freshman Sarah House was next on the team with eight kills. The Forester setters, senior Viktoria Drasler and junior Torie Pasiewicz, each had eight assists and Drasler matched Sully with eight digs. Freshman Brittany Avonts led the squad with five blocks.
Avonts registered a team-high 10 kills and three blocks in the 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 loss to Buena Vista. Pasiewicz and Drasler each had eight assists for the second time on the day and Drasler matched Sully once again with eight digs.
Elmhurst, the nation's fourth-ranked team, defeated the Foresters 25-17, 25-8, 25-8 in the visitors' first match on Saturday. Drasler led Lake Forest with nine assists and eight digs while House and Avonts shared team-high honors with six kills apiece.
Sully recorded her first career double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs and added three aces in the 22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 15-9 triumph over Wisconsin Lutheran. Avonts had nine kills and sophomore Bailey Everhart was next on the team with eight. Drasler tallied 19 assists and Pasiewicz 18. Sophomore Brianne Honda led Lake Forest with 18 digs and Avonts added 10 to go with five blocks. The Foresters tied the program record with 17 blocks and freshman K.C. Wenson's 11 total blocks matched the second-highest total in team history.
Lake Forest plays its home opener against Wheaton College Tuesday night at 7:00.
