The Lake Forest College men's hockey team scored three times in the second period to pull away and post a 4-1 victory at Lawrence University Friday night. Junior forward Alec DeAngelo had a goal and an assist to help this year's Foresters match the 1977-78 team's program record 14-game unbeaten streak.
After both teams scored once in the opening period, DeAngelo assisted on freshman forward Davis DeKorte's go-ahead goal at the 2:21 mark of the second. It was DeKorte's second score of the season and his first career game-winner. DeAngelo then added his fourth goal of the year exactly 100 seconds later with senior defenseman Andrew Stein and junior forward Ian Pichel each picking up an assist. The seventh goal of the season for senior forward Jason McAloon at 15:40 turned out to be the final score of the contest. McAloon was assisted by fellow senior forward Mcauley Banning and freshman forward Charlie Izaguirre.
Lake Forest had taken the early lead on senior forward Bobby Barrett's eighth goal of the 2014-15 season at 9:34 in the first. Sophomore defenseman Travis Hill, who transferred to the College for the spring semester, assisted on the score for his first point as a Forester. Freshman forward George Gerasimou was also credited with an assist on the play. A Viking power play goal tied the score with 2:20 to play in the period.
The Foresters were out-shot 48-26 on the night but junior goaltender Leo Podolsky tallied a career-high 47 saves, including at least 13 in each period, to earn the victory and improve to 12-2-3 on the year. Podolsky is now the nation's leader with a .953 save percentage and his 1.60 goals against average ranks sixth in the country. He has stopped 146 of 150 (97.3%) shots on goal in the team's last four games combined.
The victory gives Lake Forest an overall record of 12-3-5, including a 10-0-4 mark since November 22. The Foresters' 10-2-1 mark in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play is tied for second in the league standings with St. Norbert College. Lawrence fell to 6-13-1 overall and 5-8-0 in the conference.
The same two teams will face off again Saturday night at 7:00 in Lake Forest.
