The Lake Forest College men's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with Connecticut College in Monday's Codfish Bowl Championship Game at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Connecticut won the shootout 2-1 in eight rounds to take the title. Forester senior defensemen Charlie Stein and Ben Certo were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Stein scored the game-tying goal just 59 seconds into the third period of Monday's final. His third score of the season was assisted by sophomore forward Jack Lewis and senior forward Luke Swardenski.
Connecticut College scored the only other goal of the game at the 6:57 mark of the second period.
After needing just five saves to get through a scoreless opening period, Forester junior goaltender Leo Podolsky tallied 10 in the second, 11 in the third, and four in overtime. He is now 7-2-3 on the season with a 1.68 goals against average and .949 save percentage, which both rank among the top 10 in the nation.
After Podolsky and Connecticut College goalie Tom Conlin turned away their opponents in the first two rounds of the shootout, both teams were successful in their third attempt, the Foresters on a goal by senior forward Bobby Barrett. Podolsky and Conlin then combined for eight straight stops before the Camels converted and Lake Forest did not in the eighth round.
The 1-1 tie extended the Foresters' unbeaten streak to seven games. They are now 7-3-3 and Connecticut College 3-5-2 on the season.
Lake Forest will close out the non-conference portion of the 2014-15 regular season schedule in Minnesota next weekend. The Foresters will play at Hamline University Friday night at 7:00 and Bethel University the following afternoon at 3:00.
