The Lake Forest College men's hockey team was defeated 3-1 by St. Norbert College, the #1 team in the country, at home Friday night. Forester junior goaltender Leo Podolsky made 37 saves in the contest.
Podolsky stopped 19 of 20 shots on goal in the opening period, which ended with the team's tied 1-1.
St. Norbert started the scoring at the 10:26 mark but Lake Forest tied the game just 30 seconds later. Senior forward Luke Swardenski netted his team-high fourth goal of the year with assists credited to sophomore forward Jack Lewis and senior forward Bobby Barrett.
The Green Knights had a 20-10 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period but just a 13-11 edge in the second. The visitors scored the only goal of the period with just 46 seconds on the clock.
The Foresters out-shot their guests 11-7 in the final 20 minutes but were unable to tie the score again. St. Norbert scored an empty net goal with 10 seconds to play to clinch the victory.
Lake Forest is now 2-2-0 overall this season and 1-2-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. St. Norbert raised its overall and league record to 5-0-0.
The same two teams will face off again at St. Norbert Saturday night at 7:00.
