The Lake Forest College men's hockey team came back to defeated host Milwaukee School of Engineering 6-4 Sunday afternoon in their Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinal series. M.S.O.E., however, won what was supposed to be a 20-minute minigame 1-0 after more than 51 minutes of play.
Forester freshman Mcauley Banning and sophomore Roberto Caparelli each had two goals and an assist in the 6-4 triumph over the nation's 12th-ranked team. Banning scored the only goal of the opening period at 14:12 and his power play score at 9:34 in the third knotted the score at three. Caparelli's power play goal at 13:50 in the third tied the game again at four and he clinched the victory with an empty net score at 19:46. Banning finished the season with seven goals and Caparelli with six.
Freshman Jason McAloon assisted on both of Banning's scores and sophomore Kevin Spotts also helped set up the first score of the game. Freshman Bobby Barrett earned an assist on both of Caparelli's goals.
M.S.O.E. scored its first goal of the game at the 7:43 mark of the second period and took the lead at 11:39. The Raiders added a third goal in the period at 19:15 and led 3-1 going into the final 20 minutes.
Caparelli and sophomore Mike Violette assisted on Barrett's fourth goal of the year at 8:01 in the third period and Banning tied the game a minute-and-a-half later. The Raiders regained the lead on a shorthanded score at 12:38 but Caparelli pulled the visitors even again at 13:50, just two seconds before a 5-minute penalty against the home team expired. Banning and freshman Anthony Martinez assisted junior Thomas Bark on what turned out to be the official game-winning goal at 14:13.
Forester junior goaltender Brendan Sullivan had 23 saves while the visitors out-shot M.S.O.E. 33-27 in the contest.
Sullivan also recorded nine saves in the first 20 minutes of the minigame, nine more in the first 20-minute sudden death overtime, and six more in the second extra frame before the Raiders finally netted the series-clinching goal.
Lake Forest finished the season with a 5-22-0 overall record. Milwaukee School of Engineering is now 20-6-1 and headed to Adrian College for next weekend's MCHA Harris Cup Four.
