Behind a pair of goals by senior forward Michelle Greeneway, the Forester women's hockey team defeated St. Mary's University 4-2 at home on Sunday.
St. Mary's scored first for the second straight day, taking the lead at the 7:49 mark of the opening period. Greeneway tied the score on an unassisted goal just 22 seconds later and sophomore forward Leah Ebdon put the home team ahead at the 14:24 mark. Junior forward Allie Girard and sophomore forward Olivia Spellmire assisted on Ebdon's fifth goal of the season. Greeneway closed out the first period scoring with just 17 seconds remaining in the period. Her NCAA Division III-leading 20th goal of the year was a rebound off a shot by freshman forward Amy Budde. Lake Forest out-shot the Cardinals 8-3 in the first period.
St. Mary's pulled back to within a goal just 99 seconds into the second. The home team had a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal in the period but neither team was able to score again.
The margin was a single goal until the 17:06 mark of the third period when Forester senior defenseman Alex Stensland converted a power play opportunity. Budde assisted on Stensland's seventh score of the season. Lake Forest finished the game with a 27-14 edge in shots on goal after putting nine on target to the Cardinals' five in the final 20 minutes.
Forester sophomore goaltender Jacqueline Audet made a dozen saves on the day to earn the victory in her collegiate debut.
Lake Forest, which entered the week ranked third in the nation, won its third game in the last five days and improved to 13-1-1 on the year. St. Mary's fell to 4-7-2.
The Foresters will put its perfect 8-0-0 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association record on the line at the College of St. Scholastica next weekend. The teams will face off Friday at 4:00 p.m. and again Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
