The Lake Forest College women's basketball team pulled away for an 82-66 victory over Carroll University at home on Saturday. Senior forward Tabytha Harvey scored 21 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Foresters' first double-double of the season.
Harvey shot 10-for-13 from the floor, raising her field goal percentage on the season to .602, and recorded a game-high four steals. She was actually second on the team in points on Saturday behind sophomore guard Sam Schuring, who matched the career-high she set last Saturday at Grinnell with 22. Schuring also added four rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
Forester sophomore guard Alex Messacar and senior guard Emily Weber also reached double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Weber added eight rebounds and Messacar three steals.
Lake Forest made exactly half of its field goal attempts in the game but connected on just two of 12 three-pointers and 22 of 35 free throws. Carroll shot 37.7 percent from the floor, 6-for-16 from beyond the arc, and 20-for-30 from the line. The Foresters had a 43-33 edge in rebounds and committed three fewer turnovers (16-13).
The home team built a 43-23 halftime lead behind 12 points, seven rebounds, and three steals by Harvey, who shot 6-for-7 from the field in the period. The Foresters led by just nine before closing out the half with 11 straight points.
Lake Forest increased the margin to as many as 27 points early in the second half before a 19-2 run by the Lady Pioneers brought them to within 10 (60-50) with 7:38 to play. They would get no closer, however, and the home team made six of seven free throws in the final 75 seconds of the contest to keep the game out of reach.
The Foresters raised their overall record to 10-8 and Midwest Conference mark to 8-5. Carroll fell to 13-6 overall and 9-5 in league play.
Lake Forest will play at Beloit College Friday at 5:30 p.m. and will host Monmouth College the following afternoon at 2:00. Live video webcasts of both contests will be available at www.pennatlantic.com and live stats of Saturday's game will be linked for the Forester Athletics website.
