Junior forward Kyler Magus scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as Lake Forest defeated Marian University Saturday night.
Magus started the scoring at the 14:51 mark of the opening period. His second goal of the season was assisted by sophomore forward Josh Giacomin and freshman defenseman Scotty Nicholson. Marian, however, netted a shothanded goal in the final minute and the teams went into the locker room at the first intermission tied at one.
The Sabres pulled ahead just 58 seconds into the second stanza and added another goal just 70 seconds later. It was the Foresters turn to stage a comeback, which started with Giacomin setting up the third score of the season by senior forward Austin Aksoy at 4:28. Sophomore forward Cullen Kane then scored the only power play goal of the night with 1:26 on the clock and the teams were tied again after two periods of play.
Marian regained the lead at 5:58 in the final period but the home team answered just 52 seconds later. The goal came from junior defenseman Mark DerManulian and was assisted by sophomore forward Kyle Cote. The score remained 4-4 until Magus lit the lamp with 2:18 remaining in the contest. Aksoy picked up an assist on the third goal of the year and third career game-winner for Magus. DerManulian closed out the scoring with 21.1 seconds on the clock, taking advantage of the empty net at the other end of the ice and launching a shot over all the other skaters and into the goal. It was his second score of the game and year and junior forward Aaron O'Neill was credited with an assist for his team-high eighth point of the season.
Both teams put 36 shots on goal and had three power play opportunities on the night.
Forester junior goaltender Boyd DiClemente made 32 saves and earned the victory.
Lake Forest's second victory over Marian in as many nights improved the team's overall record to 5-1-1 and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark to 4-1-0. The Sabres fell to 2-3-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the league.
The Foresters will host Aurora University in a non-conference game Tuesday night at 7:00.
