Junior guard Andrew Toth made four three-pointers for the second straight game and finished with a season-high 22 points but the Forester men's basketball team was defeated 74-63 at Monmouth College on Saturday.
Toth was 9-for-14 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Junior forward Jim Schick and sophomore forward Orlando Brown also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively, and Brown added a game-high eight rebounds. Junior guard Mike Rueffer led the visitors with five assists.
The Foresters shot 48.3 percent from the field but made just three of seven free throws. While Toth connected on four three-pointers in six attempts, the rest of the team was 0-for-12. Monmouth shot 42.5 percent from the floor, made six of 22 shots from three-point range, and knocked down 16 of 18 foul shots. Lake Forets had a slight 34-33 edge in rebounds but committed 19 turnovers to the Fighting Scots' 11.
Lake Forest scored the game's first eight points but fell behind by as many as four in the first half, which ended with the home team ahead 34-31.
After a basket by Brown to open the second half, Monmouth scored 19 of the next 21 points to take a commanding 53-35 advantage. The Foresters trimmed the margin to 12 points on a three-pointer by Toth with 3:10 remaining but got no closer until the final 20 seconds of the contest.
Lake Forest is now 9-8 overall this season and 7-6 in Midwest Conference play. Monmouth improved to 11-6 overall and 8-5 in the league.
The Foresters will not play again until next Saturday's game at Knox College. The contest will begin at 2:00 p.m.
