The Forester men's basketball team defeated Ripon College 65-56 at home on Wednesday. Lake Forest sophomore forward Brian Madson finished with a dozen points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Madson made a pair of three-pointers and added two assists, steals, and blocked shots while playing all but four minutes in the contest.
Senior guard Jeff Beck actually led the Foresters with 20 points and senior forward Chris Madson matched his younger brother's 12. Beck connected four times from three-point range and added four rebounds in 37 minutes while Chris Madson also pulled down four boards and shot 5-for-9 from the floor in 30 minutes of play.
Freshman guard Austin Terry was next on the team with a season-high nine points and fellow freshman guard Mason Zuniga easily surpassed his personal best with a game-high seven assists.
The Foresters shot 40 percent from the field, 9-for-26 from three-point range, and 12-of-22 from the foul line. The Red Hawks connected on 36.2 percent of their field goal attempts, including just four of 22 shots from beyond the arc, and on 10 of 14 free throws. Ripon had a slight 41-38 edge in rebounds but committed 11 turnovers to Lake Forest's nine.
The game did not start well for the home team as Ripon jumped out to a 9-2 lead. The Foresters outscored their guests 16-4 over the next eight minutes, however, and led the rest of the way. The margin grew to as many as eight points in the first half, which ended with Lake Forest leading 31-25.
Ripon scored the first four points of the second half but an 8-0 Forester run, capped off by Terry's third three-pointer of the evening, extended the lead to double figures for the first time in the contest. Six consecutive Red Hawk points was followed by eight in a row by Lake Forest and seven straight by Ripon, making the score 50-45 in favor of the Foresters with 3:50 to play. The visitors would get no closer, however, as the home team shot 9-for-14 from the foul line down the stretch.
Lake Forest is now 4-7 overall this season and 2-5 in Midwest Conference play. Ripon fell to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in the leauge.
The Foresters will host Cornell College Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
