The Forester men's basketball team won 70-55 at Knox College Sunday evening in the Midwest Conference opener for both squads. Lake Forest senior guard Jeff Beck led all players in the contest with 24 points.
Beck shot 8-for-16 from the field, 3-for-6 from three-point range, and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. He also added four rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the game.
Lake Forest junior guard Jordan Gipson and senior forward Chris Madson also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Gipson dished out a game-high five assists and Madson pulled down seven rebounds.
Freshman Torrey Davis led the Foresters with 10 boards as the visitors out-rebounded the Prairie Fire 39-28. Lake Forest shot 44.6 percent from the field but made just five of 21 three-pointers and 15 of 26 free throws. Knox shot 37.3 percent from the floor, 9-for-22 from beyond the arc, and 8-for-13 from the line. Knox committed 21 turnovers while the visitors had just 10.
The Foresters broke an early 8-8 tie with seven straight points that gave them the lead for good. They increaded the margin to 14 (40-26) by halftime.
The lead reached 20 early in the second half but Knox trimmed it to eight on a three-pointer with 4:52 to play. A Prairie Fire basket with 3:58 left made it 65-55 but Lake Forest held the home team scoreless the rest of the way.
The Foresters are now 1-2 overall this season while Knox fell to 0-2.
Lake Forest will continue league play against visiting Carroll University Wednesday night at 7:30.
