Lake Forest Wins Overtime Battle with Chicago

Lake Forest Wins Overtime Battle with Chicago

The Forester men's basketball team defeated visiting University of Chicago 60-54 in overtime on Saturday. Sophomore forward Brian Madson scored one-third of the Foresters' points, including one on a free throw to clinch the victory with 3.4 seconds to play.

Madson shot 8-for-16 from the field, including a 3-for-7 performance from three-point range. He also pulled down five rebounds in the game.

Junior guard Jordan Gipson was next on the team with 11 points and he dished out a game-high five assists. Senior guard Jeff Beck and forward Chris Madson also reached double figures with 10 points apiece and Madson's 11 rebounds led all players in the contest and gave him his first career double-double.

Lake Forest shot just 31.8 percent from the floor while the Maroons connected on 36.7 percent of their field goal attempts. Both team tried 23 three-pointers with the Foresters making seven and the visitors five. Rebounds were even at 46 for each team and Lake Forest committed 14 of the game's 24 turnovers.

Chicago jumped out to a 19-8 lead but Brian Madson scored nine of his points during a 17-4 Forester run during the final seven minutes of the first opening period. Lake Forest led 25-23 at halftime.

A 9-0 run by the Maroons early in the second half gave them a lead they eventually extended to nine (43-34) with 12 minutes remaining in regulation. A three-pointer by Gipson finished off an 11-2 Forester run that tied the score at 45 with eight minutes left. Lake Forest trailed again by four before a three-pointer by Brian Madson with 1:45 on the clock made the score 51-50. A free throw gave Chicago a two-point advantage that disappeared on a shot by Chris Madson in the lane with 38 seconds to play. Neither team was able to score and the game went to overtime.

The Maroons made a basket on their first possession of the extra frame and the teams were scoreless until Forester freshman Austin Terry knocked down a three-pointer with two minutes remaining. Chicago regained the lead on a basket with 1:35 left but would not score again. A pair of free throws by Gipson with 1:14 to play put the home team ahead for good and a layup by Gipson made it a three-point game with 14 ticks left. Brian Madson pulled down a rebound and was fouled with 3.4 seconds on the clock and made the first free throw to secure the win.

The Foresters are now 2-5 on the season while the Maroons fell to 4-3.

Lake Forest will play its final game of the fall semester at Beloit College next Tuesday night. The Midwest Conference contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
