The Lake Forest College women's tennis team finished sixth at the Midwest Conference Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, over the weekend. Forester freshman Gracie Mullins reached the semifinals in both singles and doubles play.
On Saturday Mullins and junior Kaitlyn Martin defeated Beloit College's #3 doubles team 6-2 in the first set of their quarterfinal match but fell by the same score in the second. The Lake Forest duo then won the third set 7-5 to reach the semifinal round, where they fell to the eventual conference champions from Grinnell College.
The Foresters' #1 doubles team of senior Nonie Carson and sophomore Aimee Fadden fell in the quarterfinals to the eventual runners-up from Grinnell but defeated the top tandems from Ripon College (8-6) and Beloit College (8-3) to claim the consolation bracket.
Sophomores Lucy Cooper and Nikki Yeomans posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the first round at #2 doubles but were eliminated from the tournament in the quarterfinals by Lawrence.
Mullins defeated the #2 singles player from Ripon 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and knocked off the second-best singles player from Lawrence University 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. She then fell to the eventual champion from Grinnell in the semifinals.
Carson also reached the semifinals at #3 singles by defeating a player from Lawrence in the quarterfinals. She fell 6-3 in the first set but won the second 7-5 and the third 6-3 to advance.
Cooper was the only other Forester to record a victory in Sunday's singles competition. She won 8-0 against the #4 player from Monmouth in the consolation semifinals before falling to Beloit in the consolation final.
It was the final competition of the fall semester for Lake Forest, which will lose only Carson to graduation in May.
