The Lake Forest women's tennis team had a busy weekend as the Foresters defeated Monmouth (Ill.) on Sunday by a score of 9-0 and competed at the ITA Regional Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Friday and Saturday.
"We took a great first step towards the end of our season this weekend," said coach Michael Raymond. "We won some matches at ITA's and got ourselves a much needed MWC South Division win."
On Sunday against Monmouth, sophomore Lucy Cooper won both of her matches. She teamed with classmate Nikki Yeomans at second doubles to win 8-1 against Amanda Buck and Kortney Rupp and defeated Kristen Huffman 4-6, 6-1, (10-8) at first singles. Lake Forest won at #3 doubles, #5 singles and #6 singles by forfeit in the Monmouth match.
"Our team goal is to go 4-0 in October and we are now 1-0," Raymond said.
In the first round of the ITA Main Singles Draw, third-seeded Ariel Lewis of Oberlin defeated sophomore Aimee Fadden 6-1, 6-1. Fadden also dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision in the consolation round to Washington University's Katie Helfgott.
In the first round of the ITA Doubles main draw, Finley Gates and Grace Porter of Oberlin defeated Fadden and senior Nonie Carson 8-3. Fadden and Carson lost in the consolation round to Alex Cummins and Maggie Steward of Wittenberg by walkover.
In the Kzoo Open singles main draw, freshman Gracie Mullins advanced to the Round of 16 before losing to eventual champion Corinne Rauck of Washington University 6-0, 6-3. Mullins defeated Jordyn Hoover of Elmhurst 7-5, 7-5 in the first round and won 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the second round over Olivet's Kelsey Singer.
Carson also competed in the open singles main draw, but lost in the first round to Steph White of Kenyon 6-2, 7-5. She defeated Carly Olmstead of Ohio Northern in the consolation first round 7-5, 2-6, (10-6) but lost in the consolation second round to Chelsea Glasscock by walkover.
The Foresters are back in action on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. match at St. Norbert.
