The Lake Forest College men's basketball team suffered its second multiple-overtime loss of the season Tuesday night, a 106-103 double-overtime decision at Ripon College. Forester forwards Brian Madson and Jim Schick combined for 40 points and 23 rebounds in the contest.
Schich, a sophomore, finished the game with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double and sixth this season. He shot 8-for-13 from the field and 4-for-5 from the foul line while adding three assists on the night. Madson, and senior, scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Half of his six career double-doubles have come against Ripon.
Junior forward Torrey Davis led the Foresters with 23 points, sophomore guard Andrew Toth finished with 21, and junior guard Mason Zuniga also reached double figures with 12. Toth knocked down four three-pointers in eight attempts while Zuniga was 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Mike Rueffer chipped in with seven points and dished out a game-high seven assists.
At 51.4 percent, the Foresters connected on at least half of their field goal attempts for the fifth time this season. The visitors also made 13 of 27 three-pointers and 14 of 21 free throws. Ripon, however, shot 58.2 percent from the floor and was successful on 18 of 24 foul shots. Lake Forest out-rebounded the home team 40-30 but committed 16 turnovers to the Red Hawks' eight.
Ripon scored the game's first six points and quickly jumped out to a 14-2 lead. The Foresters trimmed the deficit to seven before a 17-6 Red Hawk run extended the home team's lead to 18 points (40-22) with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first half. Lake Forest scored 13 of the final 20 points in the period and trailed 47-35 at halftime.
The Foresters were unable to get any closer than seven points until a layup by Davis capped off an 11-1 run and gave the visitors a 68-67 lead with 4:17 to play in regulation. Ripon quickly regained the lead but game-tying baskets by Madson and Davis in the final 70 seconds of the half helped force overtime with the teams deadlocked at 74.
Lake Forest took the lead four times in the first 5-minute overtime period but the Red Hawks scored on their next possession each time, the last with 24 seconds on the clock. The Foresters were unable to score the winning basket in the closing seconds of the period and it ended with the teams tied again at 83.
Ripon rattled off seven straight points in the second overtime and led by as many as nine in the period, which included a total of 43 points in just five minutes. The Red Hawks made 10 of 12 free throws in the final 66 seconds to hold off another Forester comeback bid.
Lake Forest is now 6-8 overall and 5-5 in Midwest Conference play. Ripon improved to 10-4 overall and 7-2 in the league.
The Foresters will play again next Tuesday night at Beloit College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
