The Lake Forest College men's soccer team won 4-3 at Grinnell College on Saturday to raise its overall record on the year to 10-5-0 and even its Midwest Conference mark at 3-3-0. Forester freshman Max Shaw netted his first career goal and became the 18th player on the team to score this season.
Lake Forest was out-shot 6-5 in the first half but scored the period's only goal at the 14:10 mark. It was the 10th of the season for freshman Mahir Mameledzija and he was assisted by junior Chris Haught-Thompson.
The visitors doubled their lead four minutes into the second period on junior Stephen Egan's second score of the season. Senior Jacob Heaps earned the assist.
After the Pioneers pulled back to within a goal at 52:36, Shaw put the Foresters ahead 3-1 with exactly 36 minutes to play. Heaps and Haught-Thompson each recorded his second assist of the day on the play.
Mameledzija then scored what did not appear to be a meaningful goal just 96 seconds later. It was his team-high 11th goal and, because the home team scored twice late in the contest, fifth game-winner of the season.
Despite being out-shot 12-5 in the second half, the Pioneers scored twice, the first time at 76:52 and the second on a penalty kick with 2:39 remaining.
Forester senior goalkeeper Tom Biesiada made four saves in the game and raised his 2010 record to 8-3-0.
The victory kept Lake Forest's hopes of qualifying for the four-team MWC Tournament alive. The Foresters need to win their final three contests, beginning with tomorrow's 3:30 p.m. tilt with visiting Beloit College, and have Beloit prevail at Grinnell next Saturday to make it.
