Freshman goaltender Jacque Rogers recorded her fourth shutout of the season in the Lake Forest College women's hockey team's 5-0 victory at Marian University on Sunday.
Rogers made 23 saves in the game, including 12 in the opening period. She is now 12-1-0 on the season and owns the second-highest winning percentage in the nation. She is also third in the country with a 1.00 goals against average and 10th with a .948 save percentage.
After a scoreless opening period, junior defenseman Caroline Campbell struck for a power play score at the 10:19 mark in the second. Her fourth goal of the year was assisted by junior Kayla Griffith and freshman forward Sydney Simone. The Foresters converted another power play opportunity when junior forward Olivia Spellmire lit the lamp at 12:34. Junior forward Amanda Brunges set up the 14th score of the year for Spellmire. Brunges recorded another assist just two minutes later on sophomore forward Amy Budde's team-high 17th goal of the season.
Freshman forward Kate Fanning added to the visitors' lead at 5:49 in the third period with her eighth goal of the year. Simone and Budde assisted on the score Budde combined with Campbell to set up junior defenseman Melissa Bodine's second goal of 2015-16 exactly seven minutes later. Simone's 21 assists so far this season rank third in program history and Budde's 34 points are the sixth-highest total in team annals.
After being outshot 12-7 in the opening period, the Foresters put 16 shots on goal in the second period and 10 in the third while the Sabres had 11 in the final two periods combined.
The weekend sweep raised Lake Forest's overall record on the season to 20-2-1 and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark to 14-1-1. Marian fell to 9-13-1 overall and 6-10-0 in the league.
The Foresters will close out the regular season against visiting Adrian College next weekend. The teams will face off Friday night at 7:00 and again at 2:00 Saturday afternoon. Lake Forest needs to win both games to clinch the 2016-17 NCHA title.
