The Lake Forest College women's hockey team defeated visiting UW-Stevens Point, the 10th-ranked team in the nation, 7-5 Tuesday night exactly five weeks after knocking off the Pointers 2-1 in Stevens Point. Forester junior Kim Herring, an All-American last year, scored a pair of goals in her 2010-11 season debut.
Herring wasted little time getting into the scoring column, lighting the lamp just three minutes and 19 seconds into the game. The goal was assisted by seniors Sam Herron and Lynn Switaj. Junior Mira Trebilcock doubled the home team's lead at the 7:44 mark and classmate Jessica Dare gave the Foresters a 3-0 lead on her fourth goal of the season at 10:27. Junior Molly Wallner assisted on Trebilcock's score and sophomore Angie Chronis set up Dare's.
The Pointers, however, responded with three goals of their own, starting just 25 seconds after Dare's score. The visitors netted a power play goal at 16:46 and tied the score at 18:59.
The Foresters regained the advantage just 16 seconds later on senior Melissa Kravich's third goal of the year and led 4-3 after the opening period.
Stevens Point had a slight 14-13 edge in shots in the first 20 minutes and Lake Forest out-shot the Pointers by one (11-10) in the second. The visitors scored the only goal of the second period just before the buzzer sounded.
The Pointers took their first and only lead of the game just 67 seconds into the third period.
Trebilcock, however, found the back of the net to tie the score at 3:52. It was her second goal of the game and third this season. Herring, who led the nation with nine game-winning goals last year, earned her first this season at the 9:20 mark. Herron recorded her second assist of the game on the play. Chronis finished off a career-high three-point night with her third goal of the year at 15:58.
Both teams put a dozen shots on goal in the final period.
Forester senior goaltender Alyssa Wintermute made 31 saves on the night and raised her record on the year to 4-2-0.
It was Lake Forest's first season sweep of the Pointers in the 11-year history of the program. The Foresters are now 7-2-1 overall this season and 3-2-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Stevens Point fell to 8-2-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the league.
