The Lake Forest College women's basketball team prevailed 93-88 at Knox College on Saturday. Senior point guard Jenna Rice tied her career-high with 14 points and played all but four minutes in the contest.
Rice shot 4-for-7 from the field and added six rebounds and a team-high four assists against the high-pressure defense of Knox. She was just one of eight players with nine or more points in the game.
Senior guard Danielle Canulli led the visitors with 17 points and fellow senior guard Abby Wiedman had 13 to go along with a career-high nine rebounds. Junior forward K.C. Stralka had 11 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and sophomore forward Brie Majkowski added 10 points and eight boards. Junior guard Michelle Ricolcol and freshman guard Kelsey Schmidt chipped in with nine points apiece and combined for 11 more rebounds. Sophomore guard Tara Gloystein, who entered the game with nine rebounds in her career, grabbed 11 on Saturday to lead all players in the contest. Gloystein also scored a career-high seven points and added a pair of steals on the afternoon.
Lake Forest's 72 rebounds in the game are the second-highest single-game total in team history, trailing only the 81 the team pulled down against Knox in February of 2012. The Prairie Fire grabbed 62 rebounds of their own, including 31 at the offensive end of the court. The Foresters limited the home team to 27 percent shooting from the floor while connecting on a season-high 47.9 percent of their own field goal attempts.
The Foresters scored the game's first 17 points and led by as many as 21 in the first half. Knox outscored the visitors 18-5 over the final six minutes of the period, however, and trailed by just six (41-35) at halftime.
Baskets by Canulli, Wiedman, Stralka, and Rice to start the second half quickly extended the lead to 14 points. An 18-4 Forester run later in the period gave the visitors a 26-point advantage with 8:23 to play. Knox scored the next 10 points but were unable to get within single digits of the Foresters until the final minute of the game. Back-to-back Prairie Fire three-pointers in the final 20 seconds turned an 11-point lead into just a five-point win for Lake Forest.
The Foresters are now 2-5 overall and 2-3 in Midwest Conference play this season. Knox fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Lake Forest will host Lawrence University Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
