The Lake Forest College men's basketball team was defeated 70-66
in double-overtime by visiting Benedictine University Saturday
evening (December 19). The Foresters fell to 2-7 on the season
while the Eagles evened their record at 4-4.
Lake Forest sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston,
Ill./Evanston) led all players in the game with 26 points, 14
rebounds, and four blocked shots. His rebound and blocked shot
totals represent new career-highs and his four assists in the
contest matched his previous best. It was his fourth consecutive
double-double and fifth of the season. Senior guard Victor Campbell
(Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) was the only other Forester in
double-figures with 13 points in a team-high 43 minutes of play.
Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield)
finished with seven points, seven rebounds, and a team-high five
assists.
The Foresters shot 40.3 percent in the contest and held Benedictine
to just 32.8 percent. However, Lake Forest made just three of 12
three-pointers and nine of 21 free throws while the Eagles shot
9-for-26 from beyond the arc and 17-for-27 from the foul line. The
home team held a 51-46 edge in rebounds but committed 21 of the
game's 37 turnovers.
Benedictine led by as many as a dozen points in the opening period
before the Foresters closed the half on a 15-4 run and trailed by
just one (26-25) at intermission.
A three-pointer by Campbell on the first possession of the second
half put the home team ahead and started a 16-6 run that gave the
Foresters a 41-32 advantage with 13:30 to play in regulation. The
Eagles battled back and tied the score at 50 with 5:24 remaining.
The teams were deadlocked again at 59 when the second half buzzer
sounded.
The teams combined for just eight points - all within a 66-second
span - in the first overtime.
The Foresters scored first on a free throw in the second extra
period but surrendered the next five points. Clark brought the
squad to within two on a basket with a minute left but the team
would not score again.
Lake Forest will resume Midwest Conference play at Grinnell College
on Tuesday, January 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and
live statistics will be available on the
