Sophomore Samantha Russell was one of five players on the team to go 4-0 on the day as the Lake Forest College women's tennis team won 8-1 at Knox College and 9-0 at Monmouth College on Saturday.
Russell and fellow sophomore Sara Grosse prevailed 8-3 to finish off a sweep of doubles matches at Knox. Freshman Julie Lord and junior Allison Watts did not drop a game at the top spot in the lineup, nor did freshmen Tyranny Miller and Grace Gould at #2.
A 6-1, 6-3 victory by Lord at #1 and a 6-0, 6-0 blanking by Watts at #2 clinched the match and a berth in the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament for the Foresters. Gould took both sets 6-2 at #4 and Miller came out on top of a 6-2, 7-5 decision at #3. Russell turned in a 6-3, 6-2 victory at #5 and the Prairie Fire earned the point at #6.
The singles matches were played first at Monmouth and they finished in order from top to bottom in the lineup. The lineup was the same for the Foresters, with Lord winning 6-0, 6-1, Watts and Miller taking both sets 6-1, and Gould prevailing 6-0, 6-4. Russell had to come from behind in her 5-7, 6-2, (10-5) triumph and Grosse made it a clean sweep of singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Lord and Watts took the top tandem from Monmouth 8-1 while the Foresters won 8-2 at the other two spots in the doubles lineup.
The victories improved Lake Forest's overall record this fall to 14-1 and the team is now 7-1 in MWC play. Knox defeated Beloit College later in the day to finish the fall 6-9 overall and 5-4 in the league. Monmouth also posted a victory over Beloit on Saturday and is now 4-12 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
The Foresters, who have clinch the #2 seed in the MWC Tournament, which will be played in the spring, will play their final dual match of the fall at Illinois College Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
