Sophomore Samantha Russell was one of two players to win four times on the day as the Lake Forest College women's tennis team defeated the University of Dubuque 7-2 and Concordia University Wisconsin 8-1 at home on Saturday.
Russell and freshman Grace Gould started their day with an 8-5 triumph at #3 doubles. Junior Allison Watts and freshman Tyranny Miller prevailed 8-2 at #2 and the Foresters led Dubuque 2-1 going into singles play.
The home team came out on top of five of the six singles matches, including a 6-0, 6-1 win by Watts at #2. Sophomore Leeza Bodnar and Gould won both sets 6-1 at #3 and #5, respectively, and Miller and Russell defeated their opponents by identical 6-2, 6-1 scores at #4 and #6, respectively.
It was the season opener for both teams.
Dubuque blanked Concordia Chicago 9-0 in the second match of the day to even its record on the season at 1-1.
Gould and Russell moved up in the lineup to #1 doubles against the Cougars and routed the visitors' top tandem 8-1. Sophomore Sara Grosse and freshman Dana Trivanovic took their match at #2 8-4 and the Foresters won by forfeit at #3.
Gould played at the top of the singles lineup as well and did not drop a game. Russell also won 6-0, 6-0 at #2 and Grosse prevailed 6-2, 6-0 at #3. A retirement for the Foresters at #4 gave Concordia Chicago its only point of the afternoon.
Lake Forest has now started 2-0 in nine of the last 12 seasons.
The Foresters will be on the road next Sunday afternoon, taking on Wartburg College at 1:00 and host Beloit College in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams at 3:00.
