Junior Lily McCarthy finished among the top three in both distance events as the Forester women's swimming and diving team placed fourth and the men third at the A3 Carthage Classic over the weekend.
McCarthy finished third in Friday's 1650-freestyle with a time of 18:18.83. Freshman Ani Karagianis placed fifth in the same event in 18:33.52. Senior James Haney was the runner-up in the men's race with a time of 16:53.10.
Other top-5 finishes for the Foresters on Friday included a pair of performances in the women's 200-backstroke. Senior Emily Bowens finished second in the event in 2:10.03 and junior Brigit Dunne was fourth in 2:14.13. Senior Orion Huey matched Dunne's place in the men's race with a time of 1:58.34.
Senior Lauren Dalecky then posted a runner-up finish in the women's 200-breaststroke in 2:32.19.
Lake Forest finished among the top three in all four of the relays that closed out Friday's finals session, beginning the women's 400-medley relay. Bowens, Dalecky, McCarthy, and freshmen Rachel Trevillian placed third in 4:10.30 and were followed by another third-place finish on the men's side by Huey, fellow seniors Virgil Thomas and Travis Johnson, and junior David Bunting, who posted a time of 1:28.64.
The 200-freestyle relay followed and Dalecky, Bowens, and freshman Kelsey Mitchell and Hannah Stinson were third in 1:43.28. Johnson, Huey, Bunting, and senior Sam Freedberg were the runners-up on the men's side in 1:28.64.
Saturday's finals began with the 100-IM, where Freedberg was fourth in 54.79 seconds.
Karagianis then posted a third-place finish in the grueling 400-IM in 4:54.91.
Bunting had the team's next top-five finish, recording a fourth-place time of 1:46.92 in the 200-freestyle.
Bowens and Dunne were both in the top five in the 100-backstroke, placing fourth in 1:00.27 and fifth in 1:01.05, respectively.
Dalecky added a third-place finish in the 100-breaststroke (1:08.94) and Trevillian took the same place in the 200-butterfly (2:16.75).
Huey sprinted to a time of 21.80 seconds, which was good for fifth place in the 50-freestyle.
The Foresters' success in the distance events continued in the 500-freestyle, where McCarthy was second (5:17.55) and junior Toni Corbani fourth (5:25.80) in the women's race and Haney finished third with a time of 4:50.83 in the men's.
Additional third-place finishes were posted by the Foresters in the 200-medley relay, where Bowens, Dalecky, Stinson, and Mitchell completed the race in 1:53.34 and Huey, Bunting, Johnson, and Thomas combined for a time of 1:37.51.
The final swimming event was the 400-freestyle relay and the Bowens, Dalecky, McCarthy, and Mitchell combined for a fourth-place time of 3:47.31 in the women's race. Lake Forest was third on the men's side as Huey, Bunting, Johnson, and Thomas finished in 3:14.82.
Forester diver Heath Ogawa continued his highly-successful sophomore season, winning the 1-meter competition with 477.10 points and finishing second in the 3-meter event with a score of 475.70. Freshman Lizzie Johns was also the runner-up off the 3-meter board on the women's side with 367.75 points.
Carthage College finished first and Albion College second in both the men's and women's team standings. After a sizeable gap, the Forester men were third with 701 points and Illinois Wesleyan was fourth with 488. Illinois Wesleyan's women finished third (814 points) and Lake Forest's fourth (667).
It was the final meet of the fall semester for the Foresters, who will resume their 2016-17 season at Soka University during the team's training trip to southern California in early January.
