Lake Forest College competed with Hope College, Kalamazoo College, and host Wheaton College in the annual Illinois-Michigan Quadrangular on Saturday. The Forester men were the meet's runners-up while the women placed fourth. Sophomore James Haney turned in one of Lake Forest's three victories on the day.
Haney finished first in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 10:11.85, edging out junior Kristofer Korth, who was second in 10:13.17. Korth was also the runner-up in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:14.62 and Haney was sixth in the 200-butterfly in 2:05.40.
Lake Forest also posted a victory in the women's 200-freestyle, where freshman Victoria Karker's time of 1:57.13 was just 0.14 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. The Foresters' third triumph came in the men's 200-IM, where sophomore Sam Freedberg won by 0.44 seconds with a time of 2:00.70. Karker and Freedberg were both third in their other events. Karker posted a time of 55.32 seconds in the 100-freestyle and Freedberg completed the 200-butterfly in 2:02.42.
The Foresters recorded several other top-three performances at the meet, beginning with freshmen Madison Martell and Lily McCarthy finishing second and third in the women's 1000-freestyle with times of 11:09.14 and 11:11.63, respectively. Fellow freshman Simona Kurta was the runner-up in the women's 200-IM in 2:15.65 and sophomore Emily Bowens was second in the women's 200-backstroke with a time of 2:15.46. Sophomore Orion Huey (1:59.34) placed second and freshman George Hu (2:00.79) third in the men's 200-backstroke. McCarthy added a third-place finish in the women's 500-freestyle in 5:25.41 and senior Mitchell Reiner took the same place in the men's race with a time of 5:01.04.
The meet's diving competition was held at the Lake Forest College Sports & Recreation Center, where senior Christina Pekar was second in women's 1-meter event with 262.25 points and senior Sarah Pekar placed third off the 3-meter board with a score of 253.25.
Wheaton was the winner on women's side with 581 points and Hope finished first on the men's side with 576. The Forester women tallied 410.5 points and the men 531.
Lake Forest's next meet will be a dual with visiting Lawrence University next Saturday and will begin at 1:00 p.m. The Forester seniors will be recognized before the final home meet of their careers.
