The Lake Forest College swimming and diving teams competed at Carthage College's Winter Classic over the weekend and placed second in the men's team standings and third on the women's side. The Foresters turned in times that rank among the top five in team history in 13 different events, including sophomore Lauren Dalecky's school record in the 100-breaststroke.
Dalecky placed second in the event and her prelim time of 1:06.53 was her best of the day and better than the team record of 1:07.21 she set in last season's Midwest Conference Championship Meet. Dalecky also won the 200-breaststroke (2:28.64) and placed eighth in the 50-freestyle (25.28).
Freshman Victoria Karker added her name to the program's top five lists in four different individual events. She won the 200-freestyle in 1:54.29, which ranks her second in team annals. Her winning times of 5:08.39 in the 500-freestyle and 2:10.31 in the 200-IM rank her third, as does the 100-freestyle time of 53.94 seconds she swam while leading off the Foresters' 400-freestyle relay.
Fellow freshman Maggie Kroeger finished third in the 200-backstroke on Saturday and now ranks fifth in that event in program history.
The 2014-15 Forester women also rank fourth in team history in a pair of relays. Freshman Evelyn Johnson and Simona Kurta teamed with Dalecky and Karker to place second in the 200-medley relay on Friday with a time of 1:51.06. Sophomore Emily Bowens was followed by Dalecky, Kurta, and Karker in the victorious 400-medley relay in 4:01.26.
The Lake Forest men also excelled in the medley relays, posting times that rank them fifth in program history in both events. Freshman Jakobi McClellan and sophomores Josh Georgeff, Sam Freedberg, and Travis Johnson finished third in the 200-medley relay in 1:36.81. McClellan, Freedberg, Johnson, and junior Kristofer Korth were second in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:32.97.
McClellan is now also ranked fifth in team history in the 100-backstroke after finishing third in 53.19 seconds. Freshman diver Matthew Demirs also moved into the number five spot in program history in 1-meter diving with a runner-up score of 352.15 points on Friday. Freedberg's winning time of 51.94 seconds in the 100-butterfly ranks him fifth in team annals in the event. Freedberg also won the 400-IM in 4:09.26 and 200-butterfly in 1:58.51 and placed third in the 200-IM in 1:59.27.
Additional Forester victories at the meet were turned in by senior Sarah Pekar in 1-meter diving (390.55 points), Korth in the 200-breaststroke (2:08.52), and the women's 400-freestyle relay team of Karker, Kurta, Johnson, and Bowens that finished in 3:39.56. Korth was also the runner-up in the 400-IM and 100-breaststroke, Evelyn Johnson in the 100-backstroke, Bowens in the 200-backstroke, and freshman Lily McCarthy in the 1650-freestyle.
The Carthage men and women won the meet with 1,718 and 1,493 points, respectively. The Lake Forest men finished with 1,300 points and Albion College was third with 1,103. Albion was the runner-up in the women's team standings with 1,032 points and the Foresters had 834.
The annual Illinois-Michigan Quadrangular on Saturday, January 17, is the next meet on the Foresters' schedule. The swimmers will compete at Wheaton College that day and the divers at Lake Forest. Competition at both locations will begin at 1:00 p.m.
