Despite participating in just two of the meet's three days of competition, the Lake Forest College men and women finished second and third, respectively, at the University of Chicago's Phoenix Fall Classic over the weekend. Seniors Christina and Sarah Pekar were the top two finishers in both diving events.
Christina Pekar won the 3-meter competition on Saturday with 459.15 points and Sarah was the runner-up with 425.15. Christina also finished first off the 1-meter board on Sunday with a score of 444.60, while Sarah's 420.40 points were good for second place again.
Lake Forest had several swimmers finish in the top eight in multiple events, including sophomore Sam Freedberg, who was third in both individual medleys. He finished the 200-IM in 1:58.33 and the 400-IM in 4:20.90.
Freshman Victoria Karker placed seventh in the 500-freestyle in 5:15.82 before finishing third in the 200-freestyle, where her time of 1:56.76 ranks her third in program history.
Junior Kristofer Korth and sophomore Lauren Dalecky recorded sixth-place finishes in both breaststroke events. Korth completed the 100-breaststroke in 1:01.08 and the 200 in 2:12.74. Dalecky finished her races in 1:10.24 and 2:35.20, respectively.
Three Foresters were among the top eight finishers in both backstroke events. On the women's side freshman Maggie Kroeger was sixth in the 200-backstroke on Saturday with a time of 2:15.48 while sophomore Emily Bowens placed seventh in 2:15.54. Bowens was also seventh in the 100-backstroke on Sunday in 1:03.73 (1:03.40 in prelims). Kroeger finished eighth in 1:04.67 (1:04.11 in prelims). Sophomore Virgil Thomas was 8th in the 200-backstroke in 2:07.11 (2:05.28 in prelims) and sixth in the 100-backstroke with a time of 55.92 seconds.
The Lake Forest men finished the weekend with 514 points, second only to Chicago's 1,085. Iowa Lakes Community College was third with 439 points. Chicago also won the women's competition with 957 points and Hillsdale College was second with 630. The Foresters tallied 438 points, 18 more than fourth-place Iowa Lakes.
The Foresters will be in action again in two weeks at the Carthage College Swimming Classic. Competition on December 5 and 6 will begin at 9:00 a.m.
