The Forester softball team swept a Midwest Conference
doubleheader at Illinois College on Saturday (April 17), winning
the opener 7-1 and game two 5-2. Lake Forest raised its overall
record on the season to 16-10-1 and its league mark to 6-1. The
Lady Blues fell to 5-20 overall and 0-9 in conference play.
Forester freshman pitcher Jordan Ratliff (Petersburg,
Mich./Summerfield) allowed just one base hits while blanking the
home team for the first five innings of game one. She struck out
two batter and walked one in the contest. Ratliff held the Lady
Blues scoreless for the final three innings of game two as well,
allowing three hits while striking out two more hitters. She is now
8-4 with a 1.61 earned run average and two saves on the season.
Another Lake Forest freshman, second baseman Megan Harkins
(Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) led off the opener with a base
hit, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on
a single by senior shortstop Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake
Park). The Foresters extended their lead to 2-0 when senior
outfielder Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South)
singled with one out in the second inning and later scored on a
base hit by fellow senior outfielder Sam Pinsoneault (Manchester,
N.H./New Hampton).
A four-run fourth inning broke the game open. Senior first baseman
Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) started the
rally with a one-out single and scored on a triple by fellow senior
catcher Jill Pfund (Morenci, Mich./Morenci). Pinsonneault followed
with her second RBI-single of the game and advanced to third base
on a double by Harkins. A fielder's choice retired Pinsonneault at
the plate but the throw to first and some aggressive base-running
allowed Harkins to score. Rainey then doubled in the fourth and
final run of the inning.
A sacrifice fly by Pfund in the top of the seventh inning scored
the Foresters' final run of the game. Sophomore pitcher Cami Daun
(Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) pitched the final two innings of
the contest and allowed just a seventh-inning run on three base
hits.
Harkins, Rainey, Neill, and Pinsonneault each had two of the
visitors' 10 base hits in the contest.
Pinsonneault added a career-high three hits, including her first
career home run, in game two. She led off the third inning with a
single and later scored the Foresters' second run on an error. Her
round-tripper started a two-run fifth inning and she singled in the
team's final run in the sixth.
Lake Forest's first run was scored by Neill in the top of the
second inning. She reached on a two-base error and came home on a
base hit by Pfund. After Illinois College tied the game with two
runs in the bottom of the fourth innig, Pinsonneault's homer
regained the lead for the Foresters and a base hit by Rainey and a
couple of errors by the home team plated another run.
Freshman pitcher Molly Thomsen (Rumford, R.I./St. Mary Academy)
allowed just two runs in four innings to earn the victory and even
her record on the year at 4-4.
The Foresters will play two more games at a fellow MWC South
Division member tomorrow when the team travels to Monmouth College.
The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.
