The Lake Forest College softball team began its season
Tuesday (March 9) with a split of two National Fastpitch Coaches
Association Leadoff Classic pre-tournament games. The Foresters
opened with a 5-4 loss to Moravian College before defeating
Methodist University 8-2.
Lake Forest took a 3-0 lead in the top of thr fourth inning against
Moravian. Senior Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) drew a
one-out walk to start the rally and classmate Mallory Norton
(Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) singled her to third. After Norton
stole second, freshman Noel Harmon (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way
Central) recorded her first career base hit and run batted in and
advanced to second on the throw. Norton scored on a sacrifice fly
by sophomore Leslie Harshey (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and a base
hit by senior Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian)
plated Harmon.
Forester freshman Kelly Chesnut (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) held the
Greyhounds scoreless until the fifth inning. Two of the three runs
she surrendered in the inning were unearned and Moravian scored two
more unearned runs in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. Chesnut allowed
just five hits in five innings of work while striking out one
batter and walking none in her collegiate debut.
Senior Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton) led off the
top of the seventh with a double, advanced to third on a groundout,
and scored the final run of the game on another groundout.
Freshman Megan Harkins (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) walked
to lead off the bottom of the first inning against Methodist. She
stole second and scored on a double by Harmon. Rainey then singled
in Harmon, giving the Foresters a quick 2-0 lead.
After Methodist plated one in the top of the second, Lake Forest
scored four in the bottom of the frame. Neill and Harkins singled
and Harmon walked, loading the bases for Rainey, whose line drive
to centerfield cleared the fence for her second career grand
slam.
Senior Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South)
walked, sophomore Danielle Gore (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey)
doubled, and both players scored on an error in the third inning,
extended the lead to 8-1.
Lake Forest freshman Jordan Ratliff (Petersburg, Mich./Summerfield)
allowed just two runs (one earned) and three base hits in a
complete-game victory in her collegiate debut. She struck out five
and walked five in the contest.
Harkins and Rainey each had two hits in the second game of the day
and Rainey's five runs batted in matched her career-high. Harmon
was 2-for-3 in game one and 3-for-6 with three runs scored on the
day.
The Foresters will face Simpson College at 9:00 Tuesday (March 10)
morning and Husson University at 1:00 p.m. The team will be off on
